Full Mouth Implants: The Difference Between All-on-4 and All-on-6

For patients who have lost or are at risk of losing all their teeth, full-mouth implant rehabilitation offers a fixed solution. Case assessment is critical.

Full Mouth Implants: The Difference Between All-on-4 and All-on-6

The terms All-on-4 and All-on-6 define the minimum number of implants used to support a fixed full-arch prosthesis in the upper or lower jaw. While both approaches fix a full arch on 4 or 6 implants, they are not interchangeable.

What is All-on-4?

All-on-4 places a full-arch prosthesis on 4 implants. The two posterior implants are angled at 45° to maximise the use of available bone. It is a faster and less invasive option for patients who do not require bone grafting.

What is All-on-6?

All-on-6 seats the arch prosthesis on a broader support surface of 6 implants. It may be preferred in patients with adequate bone density where wider long-term load distribution is desired.

Which option is right for me?

This question can only be answered with a CBCT (3D bone scan). Bone volume, bone density, gum anatomy and the patient's overall health are the clinical criteria that determine which approach is applicable.

  • CBCT bone scan is a mandatory assessment step
  • Smoking and diabetes affect implant success rates
  • A temporary prosthesis is typically fitted on the day of surgery
  • Transition to the final prosthesis may take 3–6 months
  • Maintenance: electric toothbrush and interdental brushes recommended

How long do you need to stay in Istanbul for full-mouth implants?

The implant placement session typically requires 5–7 days in Istanbul. The temporary prosthesis is fitted on the day of surgery. The second visit for the final prosthesis is planned after osseointegration is complete.
